Excerpt from “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top” from Oklahoma. Music by Richard Rogers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, and arranged by Christopher Marlow. Laura Ward, pianist, Daniel Shigo, baritone, MorningStar Studios, 2014.

She Walks in Beauty was recorded for a patron of the New York Philharmonic in 1990 during my third season at the New York City Opera. Lullaby was recorded on the fly for the composer during the same recording session. I was given a cassette tape of the recording session, which sat in a box in my parents' basement for more than a decade before being unearthed and then digitized.

As a member of the New York City Opera for twenty-three seasons, I once appeared in drag for a solo line in Bernstein’s Wonderful Town, wearing Marilyn’s blond wig from Marilyn the Opera and character shoes worn by director Richard Sabellico in La Cage aux Folles. What a hoot! Productions represented below include A Quiet Place, Brigaddon with Maestro Joseph Colaneri, Cinderella with Nancy Marchand, Don Pasquale, Magic Flute, New Moon, Mikado, Mefistofele, Seance on a Wet Afternoon, Harvey Milk, La Clemenza di Tito, Semele, L’etoile, The Student Prince, Attila, Rigoletto, Falstaff, where I worked a Snape-ish wig, Ariodante at the Spoleto Festival, and Lady in the Dark at City Center. Also much represented is my work-wife Paula, with whom I waltzed in Renata Scotto’s Traviata and cavorted in many productions—in 101 in the Shade, we danced while she stood on my shoes! Kudos to David and Paul, dressers extraordinaire.
